Well, the short answer is no. However, I understand that might require some explanation.
There are a few reasons I don’t allow girlfriends. wives, or significant others on set.
It’s distracting. The model is usually more interested in pleasing the guest than in getting a good shot. It also tends to make the model very self conscious.
I am really not set up for spectators.
Part of the process, especially early on, is for us to figure out whether or not we work well together, and that’s impossible if there’s a wife/girlfriend in the mix.
This really isn’t a couple’s activity.
I show a fair amount of skin in my shots, and I often have to tell the model what body part looks good in what position….something about doing that in front of someone’s wife creeps me out, sorry.
I need to see how you do in front of a camera on your own.
The exception to the guest rule is if you wish to bring along a friend who also wants to get in front of the camera. In this case everyone is involved, no one is just a spectator, and everyone is in the same situation. Just make sure I know who they are in advance, and I have to make sure they qualify. This may be an ideal solution for anyone super nervous, or if models are travelling from the same location.
To put it bluntly, this is a business and hopefully, an art form. We have a lot of fun, but still you wouldn’t show up to a job interview, training session, or professional appointment with your girlfriend in tow, this deserves the same amount of respect. If showing up to a photo shoot on your own isn’t possible, and if you are unable to get in front of your camera without an audience, then this probably isn’t right for you.
